“I first met Paul Roberts on his first tour with The Stranglers. They weren’t sure what sort of a reaction they would get with a new frontman, so they booked small clubs. Their manager Colin Johnson invited me to The Boardwalk in Manchester. The group rocked the walls of the place that night, sweat rained from the ceiling! Paul proved once and for all that those ‘big shoes’ had been well filled, and the next morning I was sure I’d be deaf for the rest of my life! Less than 6 months later, The Stranglers headlined Brixton Academy. They were truly back where they belonged. Over the years we’ve had a million laughs, a few beers and the odd curry! I’ve watched him thrill hundreds of audiences, and -- due in no small part to my sheer size -- he’s been able to tell me exactly were I was stood in those audiences, even when they were out-door festivals!! I’d like to think I played my part in his last success with The Stranglers, a huge hit album (Norfolk Coast) and a Top 20 UK single (Big Thing Coming) by banging the drum at EMI Records, and talking my bosses through the possiblilties that lay ahead. His first solo project on leaving the group ‘Black in Town’ was truly our baby, and for my money he’s one of the best frontmen we’ve got in the UK.” Alan Parker -- Author
